Why Garage Door Springs Fail
Garage door springs are rated by cycle count; one cycle equals one open and one close. Most standard springs are rated for 10,000 cycles, which translates to roughly 7-10 years of normal use for a household that operates the door four to six times per day. When that cycle limit is reached, the metal fatigues and the spring breaks, often without warning and sometimes with a loud bang that sounds like a gunshot inside the garage.
Oklahoma and Texas weather accelerates that wear. Extreme summer heat, rapid temperature swings, and humidity cause springs to expand, contract, and corrode faster than in more temperate climates. A spring that might last 10 years in a milder region may fail in 6 or 7 here. That’s why we stock high-cycle springs rated for 25,000 cycles or more, giving our customers significantly longer life between replacements.

Torsion Springs vs. Extension Springs
Not all garage door springs are the same, and knowing which type you have helps explain how your door operates and what’s involved in replacing it.
Torsion springs are mounted horizontally above the garage door opening on a metal shaft. They work by winding and unwinding to store and release energy as the door moves. Most modern doors, especially heavier two-car doors, use torsion springs because they provide more controlled movement, last longer, and are generally safer when they break. A broken torsion spring stays on the shaft rather than flying loose.
Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on either side of the door. They stretch and contract to counterbalance the door’s weight. Older homes and lighter single-car doors commonly use extension springs. When an extension spring breaks, it can snap free if safety cables aren’t installed, another reason professional replacement matters. We inspect and replace both types, and we’ll let you know if safety cables are missing on your extension spring system.
Client Testimonials
Our garage door was crooked and needed help! Chris Grabenschroer came over and not only fixed the garage door but also made sure that everything was lubed up and working properly. I appreciated his attention to detail and that he explained everything that he was doing.
10 out of 10!
I had an excellent experience with the Overhead Door Team! Their communication, pricing, and professionalism were top-notch. They installed my Chamberlain opener along with a brand-new, great-looking door with an impressive seal. Although there was a small issue with the install initially, they quickly followed up, fixed it, and took the time to explain what had happened.
Special thanks to my installer, Tim, who was the epitome of professionalism. I highly recommend The Overhead Door for any garage door installation.
Great company and even better customer service. One of my door remotes had the button stop working and I assumed I’d just have to buy a new remote to remedy the situation but they were able to repair it at no cost when I took it in.
Great service and very knowledgeable! Super fast and affordable! Everything I could ask for! Thank you and would definitely recommend to anyone! Rocki is amazing and we have had him out a few times times over the course of 11 years. He was able to fix this again! The wire cable broke on the side of the garage and our garage door opener kept pulling it up even though the cable was broke. It shouldn’t have done that. He adjusted the settings so it won’t do that again. Shows me some maintenence things to do with it to make it last longer. Great guy! I will continue to call them out in the future and highly suggest them to anyone and everyone!
Signs Your Garage Door Spring Is Failing
Springs don’t always break all at once. There are usually warning signs in the weeks or months before a full failure, and catching them early can prevent a complete breakdown at the worst possible moment. The most common indicators include a door that feels unusually heavy when you lift it manually, visible gaps or separation in the spring coils, squeaking or grinding sounds during operation, a door that opens unevenly or tilts to one side, and an opener that strains or runs but only moves the door a few inches before stopping.
If you notice any of these signs, don’t wait for the spring to break completely. A proactive replacement is faster, safer, and often less expensive than an emergency call after a full failure. Check your garage door parts and accessories if you’re unsure what components your door uses, or call us and we’ll walk you through it.

What to Expect From Our Spring Repair Service
When our technician arrives, the first step is a full assessment of the spring system and the door’s overall balance. We don’t just swap the broken spring and leave; we check the cables, drums, and hardware for signs of wear that could cause a secondary failure soon after. If we find anything else that needs attention, we’ll tell you upfront before doing any additional work.
We carry the most common torsion and extension spring sizes on every service vehicle, which means the majority of spring replacements are completed the same day you call, usually within a couple of hours. We’ll also test the door’s balance after installation and adjust the opener’s force settings if needed to make sure everything is operating correctly before we leave.

FAQs
How long does garage door spring replacement take?
Most spring replacements are completed in one to two hours. We carry the most common torsion and extension spring sizes on our service vehicles, so the majority of jobs are finished in a single visit without waiting on parts.
Can I replace my garage door spring myself?
We strongly advise against it. Torsion and extension springs are under extreme tension and can cause severe injury if they release unexpectedly during a repair attempt. Professional technicians use specialized tools and follow a calibrated process to safely wind and tension springs. This is one repair where professional service is genuinely the safer and smarter choice.
How do I know if my garage door spring is broken?
The most obvious sign is a door that won’t open at all, or an opener that runs but only lifts the door a few inches. Other signs include a visible gap in the spring coils, a door that feels extremely heavy when lifted manually, uneven movement, or a loud bang from the garage, which is often the sound of a spring breaking. If you notice any of these, call us before attempting to operate the door.
Should I replace one spring or both at the same time?
Both at the same time, in almost every case. If one spring has reached the end of its cycle life, the other is typically right behind it. Replacing both during the same service call costs less in labor than two separate visits, and it prevents a second breakdown within weeks or months of the first repair.
Do you offer service plans for maintaining installed doors?
Yes. We offer preventative maintenance programs that include inspections, lubrication, and adjustment of moving parts. Keeping your doors in good condition can reduce downtime, lower repair costs, and extend system lifespan. Ask about adding service to your installation quote.
